Tips for Scoring More Goals

by
Charles LaCalle

Look at the goalie’s position, and get inside the box or as close to the goal as possible. Statistically, more goals are scored closer to the goal.

2. Run-up to add power to your strike. Make sure you have the ball out in front of your feet, rather than under your feet. Allow yourself to get 3 or 4 strides in before striking.

3. Decide on the best technique for your shot. Inside of the foot will provide the best accuracy, but shooting with the laces will provide greater power. Aiming low tends to be more effective, as strikes in the low corners require keepers to stretch to make the save.

3. Plant non-kicking foot alongside ball. This gives you more balance and a cleaner shot.

4. Keep head down and your eyes on ball when striking. Avoid looking at defends. This is one of the hardest habits to break, since most people like to look where they are kicking. But it will pay off in the end.

5. Keep body over ball.

6. Make contact with the middle to top half of the ball.

7. Use the inside middle of your foot to strike the ball. This is a hard area of the foot, so it gives the strike more power.

7. Get a large back swing with your leg. The further back you can get your kicking leg before striking, the more power your strike will have. A large back swing and a large range of movement will result in a cleaner, faster strike.

Maintain composure.

8. Follow through. Continue the kick after you have made contact with the ball. Follow through toward your target. Otherwise, you’re just chipping at the ball. Following through will help to improve balance and accuracy.
